Senkos hook ups

Recommended Posts

I throw senkos on my bait caster and spinng rod depending on the conditions the bait caster is a 7'3 medium moderate action and hook them right in the corner of the mouth but when I use the spinning rod (7'0 medium) fen wick hmg so it is a little bit heavier then other medium rods I always hook them in the back of the throat. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds to me like your not feeling the bite as well on the heavier rod and letting the bass swallow it before you set the hook

once I get a really good feel for a lure on a certain rod I don't like to change it up because things like this happen. Either I dont work it the same or miss strikes, it just throws me off

Watch your line. A lot of the time I'll see a senko bite before I feel it, especially since I usually have braid on my spinning rod I fish them on.

sounds like they got the bait to long

watch your line the whole time. if you see any jumps in the line lift it to see if theres pressure. most my bites on a senko i see it before i feel it

Yep on the line watch...I use braid on a medium stick...line jumps I reel slack to feel pressure and usually see bass swimming with it then set hook

Line watch. Any change in it speed, direction, jumps, etc.. set the hook. I use powerpro slick 8 yellow to help with the visibilty for this. Wether i use a flouro leader changes with fishing pressure and water clarity.

Do you have the same line on both? This happens a lot to me too. You have to see your line twitch or move off to know a fish has it. An octopus hook would cut down on it some because it's almost a circle hook.

Some days the bass are quicker to swallow, watch your line and don't leave to much slack

I fish weightless plastics whenever I can and use yellow braid with a leader. I'm always watching my line and maybe half the time I'll feel them take it. I still sometimes get deep hooked fish but it's  not often.

Crushing the barbs and using the 'go in through the gill' method to remove the deep hooks make it not that big of a deal.

Welcome aboard!

Great answers above. Line watching is critical, but
not always the answer as we can all attest when
you start to reel in for another cast and there's a bass
on the line!

I like to use yellow braid for my mainline which is much
easier for me to see than green braid or other lines.

In addition to line watching, not having too much slack
in the line is a good idea. I like to reel in as much as I can
without affecting the drop, but giving me a somewhat
taut line.
