I have some Cabelas raingear I bought about 3 yrs ago and it's lost its ability to shed water. What are you guys using these days to re-waterproof? Wash them in some solution? Scotchguard spray?

Wash it thoroughly, dry and treat with 303 Fabric Guard.

I wash in tec-wash.  They have one for washing gear, and one for waterproofing.

I looked into the Nikwax Tech Wash and now I'm confused. Which one...Softshell proof or TX Direct? I don't even know the difference between a softshell and hardshell....

There's no Gore-tex; just what Cabelas calls DryPlus. And the pants are just nylon layered pants. Basically just light weight raingear so whichever would be most waterproof.

I use the Nikwax Tech Wash first to clean the gear and then the TX Direct wash-in to waterproof it.  Been using it on all my GuideWear now several seasons.  Just follow the instructions - seems to work well.

The other option is to just get a spray on product like Camp-Dry.  Those products work well on the lighter non-gortex gear.  Wash it first and then really soak it.  Do it in a well ventilated place (even better outside)  Then let it dry completely.  Usually takes a day.

Thanks AJ. I've tried the sprays and they just don't last too long. There are great reviews on that TX wash in repellent though. Anything to be concerned about with the washer machine itself?

I haven't noticed any problems.

It's just like doing a regular load of laundry but using the product instead of traditional soap. 

Rinses out well & without leaving a smell or residue,  if that's what you're implying.

I have a lot of Cabelas Dry + and have had no problems with just washing with normal detergent.  But everything has a life when it will deteriate in performance.  If purchasing new I would find a name brand with the weight and features I like , breathable only,  product on sale and buy that.  I've had good luck with Columbia, Campmor, Cabelas.

I really like the very light jacket I now have, and its function is simply to shield from wind and rain.  I get warmth from layers of fleece and wind shirt.  very light, comfortable, and versitile for all kinds of weather.

I looked at those and they seem like a tarp to me; but lots of people swear by them.
