12 vs. 15 Pound Test Copolymer

Featured Replies

I am getting a 6.3:1 Cabela's Arachnid Reel and a 7'1" MH Tournament ZX Rod. I am leaning towards PLine CXX in 12 or 15 lb test. I like 15 pound so i can tie a 12 lb fluorocarbon leader. this combo is for my moving baits. thanks for help and advice.

The only leaders I tie are to braid.

Yes, no need for a leader.

You will be fine with either and no need for a leader at all.

if you are fishing moving baits then go with 12 if you need your baits to run fractionally deeper.  Use 15# only if you think you are going to be throwing heavier baits, etc.

Forget 12 and 17 for moving baits with PLine CXX. I have a buddy Bryan that loves the stuff, but after some testing found 10# P Line CXX breaks closer to 22 pounds.  He uses 10 pound CXX for moving baits and for flipping and other heavy cover applications he goes to P Line Halo 17 pound test.  Go to http://www.baybass.com/forum/index.php?topic=310.0 and check it out.  Also while you are there spend some time surfing. Bryan runs a really informative site especially for MD.and Northern VA anglers

I will agree the stuff is very strong. I was going to pick up some 12# for my spinning reel, but after comparing the diameter to mono I downgraded to 8#.

I use 15 lb p line cxx on my t rig setups. Works fine on my tatula, curado, and exceler

That is fine for those bottom techniques, but for moving baits the 10# will give better action to the bait.

If your fishing moving baits, go with the smallest diameter you can.  Since mono floats crankbaits and such won't go as deep.  Obviously spinnerbaits and swim jigs it wouldn't matter.  CXX is tough stuff.  Since I fish primarily fluro I use 10 lb CCX for my top water baits.

Moving baits....moving on top, in the water column or on along the bottom???

Do you mean diving crankbait, jerk bait, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, buzz baits, Chatterbait, spoons, glide boat, wake bait etc, etc.???

Use 12# and if you are loosing too many lures go to 15# or whatever you prefer.
