i was curious if anyone had any thoughts on whether or not there is a difference between soft bait colors, and hard bait colors.

whenever I'm fishing stained water I always use a junebug (black and blue) carolina rig and a firetiger squarebill. it works out just great, but last week i got some new baits and tried switching my color choices to a black squarebill and a neon green and orange worm. i caught a few fish but the numbers from the previous setup just weren't reflected. so do you think there is a difference between hard and soft bait colours? or is it more of a finesse VS. power fishing thing?

In stained to muddy water, I find that in general, dark colors produce best for bottom bouncing soft plastics. Whereas bright or white colored moving baits produce best in stained to muddy water. In less stained to clear water, natural colors produce best for me both in moving baits and soft bottom bouncing baits. 

I think it could have been a where you placed your lure at that moment and what that fish were feeling that day type of thing. 

Plastics I usually use white, black or green. I have a lot to go threw and pink yellow or any bright color isn't in the rotation right now. 

I don't think I own any green Hardbaits. They are white, black, and a variation of crawfish or baitfish. 

I think it's more a time and place situation. 

 

 

 

 

Baitfish don't get darker in dirty water. If anything they get lighter. I'm typically imitating a baitfish with my hardbaits, so I stick to the usual colors.

Crawfish patterns are different, but those colors I change more by time of year than I do water color.
