New curado 201 making weird noises??

Featured Replies

So I recently picked up another curado and have only fished it maybe 5-6 times now.

And last time I went out, it started to make a weird kinda gritty noise. And it only happens when I'm retrieving my lure. And, it doesn't happen everytime. It doesn't seem to hinder performance. But it's really annoying especially cause it's brand new.

I own 3 other curado and none of the other make that noise. You guys have any ideas on what it could be?? Also when I'm retrieving the lure and it begins to make that noise I can also kinda feel it in the handle. Bad reel? Should I send it to shimano?

Take it back asap send it back! You already know what a curado is supposed to perform like so return it.! You can also call shimano but I think you'll have to pay shipping I had a similar issue with my citica I. I called shimano and they have pretty good customer service he told me to ship it to him and they would fix any issues I don't even think they were going to charge me however  I ended up finding my tw invoice paper and sent it back to tw and they sent me a new one.

Ok. I bought it from a local tackle shop over a month ago so I don't think I can exchange it with them but I guess I can try. If not I'll give shimano a call. Thanks!

Flush and relube the bearings. Use a Q-tip to put a thin layer of oil inside the brake drum before you put it back together and you should be good to go. Mine make a little noise from time to time and it's a pretty well known issue. The oil on the brake side of the reel fixes it quickly.

Shimano recommends that, in addition to oiling the brake pipe and block,  a little drag grease be added to the brake block pivot shaft.

This will help eliminate the noise.

Since you have curados already you should know these basic maintenance instructions mentioned above I feel after doing these applications to your reel and you still get no good results to your problems, call shimano they do have pretty good customer service.

One possibility, based on your description, is the pinion gear is not fully retracting when you turn the crank. Stop using the reel now, just in case. A new reel will typically have a  lot of  excess  grease. If some of that got on the shafts the yoke slides on, it can hang up a little, causing the  pinion gear to be not fully engaged with the main gear. You will damage the gear set if you continue to use the reel. If that is indeed what is wrong.

The only maintenance I've done to the reels is what it says on the yellow card that comes in the box. I don't really trust myself to do much more because I don't know what I'm doing. And I don't want to break the reel since it's so expensive

Well I cleaned it and did what the yellow card said to do. I'm going fishing in 3 days  if it's still making that noise I will call shimano
