can you insulate your own bait tank. Im wanting to buy a new bait tank. Im looking at a 30 to 40 galon tank. i found one for $99.99 uninsulated and im going to bulid my own fittler box Im wanting to put harring and some trout and maybe some big shiners. a list of parts and all that good stuff would be nice.

A guy gave me a good tip, look for an old chest type freezer.  It don't even have to work.  as long as it is water tight, you can make your own charcoal type filter system with parts from a pet shop and small pump. it is already insulated, and if you look you can probably get one free for the hauling.  

???That is if your talking about catching your own or storing them.  if your talking about something to keep in your boat....OOPS sorry.  Id just use a large cooler with a recirc pump.  works great for minnows when crappie fishing

more important than insulation is shape.  If you are going to pen herring, the container must be round or have rounded corners or they will bury nose first in the corners and die.  THey need to keep moving.

if you are going to mount it in the boat, all you need to do is build around it a few inches and fill the entire void with expandable foam.  And remember to set it up on a spacer so you insulate the bottom as well.  You can use the foam from home depot but it will not hold up over time.  I would use something like this:

If you want a portable tank, either buy one or find a big cooler with at least 5" radius, round corners.

You do realize water weighs eight pounds per gallon.  So don't get too carried away on a big tank in a jon boat, unless you have one big jon.

Not sure where you're gonna be fishing but normally when stripper fishing it's gotten fairly cold. unless your doing the deep water with down riggers fishing, I find herring do just fine in a 5 gallon bucket with an airpump and stone in it.  Just add some salt tablets.   Now this is coming from a guy that seldom uses them and has never bought more that two dozen when I did and don't care if they don't live till the next day.   If I'm just going to be stipper fishing and not keeping any fish, I just dump them in the livewell.   Just remembered, don't do that with an aluminum jon, putting salt in it might give you a bigger livewell than you want before too long.

its a fiberglass jon boat its rated for 600 lbs with gear so i can hall some wight.

I purchased a round livewell and wondering how to insulate it too. Thanks for the idea of the foam.
