How many #s?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of getting a new trolling motor.  The one I have (don't know how many pounds fo thrust the small Johnson has) doesn't seem to have enough thrust, it does alright on still water but when on the river I could use more thrust against the current.  The boat is an 18.5ft. Stratos with a 115 Johnson.  So how many pounds of thrust and which trolling motor do you guys recommend?  Thanks!

as much as you can afford. i have a 65# on my 19' and it zips around pretty good ...i wish i had a 80#  to get thru the heavy vegatation. another thing you need to consider is 12 or 24 volt(1 or 2 batteries) everybody has their opinion but motorguide or minn kota are quality t.m's..on a 18' boat fishing current i wouldn't go any lower than 55# thrust.

Yeah, with a boat that big,get as much as you can afford.I use a Minn Kota, but Motor Guide is just as good. They're both fine motors.

I got a Minn Kota endura 50LB at wally world on clearance for 154, it is a transome mount with a tiller, but it will be my primary power so I don't mind. Back to the point at hand, check the stores for end of season deals.

I would say a 80 pound thrust 24V, i have fished with a 18-19 foot boat with a 60 and 80 lbs. thrust.

BY FAR, 80 HELPS IN ALL SITUATIONS

I just installed a MK 80 Max 24 V on my 285 Pro and I think it's ideal. I replaced a 46 MG 12V that wasn't even in the same league. Anywhere from 65-80 should be idea. I was able the get the Maxxum Pro with the lift assist shock and it's worth if you can afford it.

Thanks for the replies.  Sounds like 80# 24v  is the way to go.  As far as being able to afford it, come on guys we're talking fishing here.  It's kind of like having kids if you wait till you think you can afford them you never will.  The search is on.

I'd say 24V, 65# or greater.  I have 65# on a 19' w/ 175 and it works good.
