Pontoon boat

Featured Replies

I know this has probably been asked before but i couldn't find any previous posts, so here goes.  Does any one use or has anyone used a single person pontoon boat to fish out of?  I am talking about the ones like a Trout Unlimited style.  I am thinking of getting one for small ponds and such, more so than a jon boat, since I don't have a way to transport the boat.  My concern is do they allow you to sit high enough off the water to be able to cast well and accurate?

Sorry, I have never used one of those. I did see them at the local Cabela's though. I think they might be great for small ponds and stuff. I would be worried that I would drop all my stuff in the water or falling out and not being able to get back in. Plus where do you put your stuff? I like taking a cooler with drinks and snacks and my tackle box. I would feel restricted on what I could bring with me. I would also think the wind would blow that around like a kite.

I have seen guys fishing the Cabelas design on the White River. They appeared to spend most of their time messing with the boat. It appeared to me that they were really using the boat to transport them from spot to spot, then getting out (with waders) to fish. It sure didn't look like something I would be interested in, but I have not actually fished from one.

Something else to consider and I have this problem with a kayak I fish out of: You are very restricted. You can't stand up and can only fish straight ahead. Wind? I guarantee that will be a huge issue. I would recommend sticking with a john boat or the small version of a traditional pontoon boat.

Thanks guys, I think for now I am going to be relegated to the shore or wading, since just found out we have a new baby on the way, my fishing budget just got even smaller.

Get a tube (U-boat).  They are sweet.  Easy to use.  Good stuff.
