Getting Started

Featured Replies

Hey everybody. I'm pretty new to bass fishing, it's been walleye and pike for a long time. Anyway, I need advice on lures. What is a good list of lures I should have? When should I use them?

hey first off  Now go up top of the page click articles scan through the Begginers,Techniques, equipment, tackle and lures. ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS and you will get answers THIS BE DA PLACE 8-)

There are two approaches you can take to this:

1.  We can all tell you our go-to baits, and encourage you to go and buy them.  However, you'll end up being told to buy spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, jerkbaits, lizzards, crankbaits, worms, senkos, jigs, swimbaits, Pop-Rs, and a host of other lures.

2.  You can go to BPS and just start pulling stuff off the shelf that looks good.

The end result will be the same :o

Welcome to the forum!

First off. let us know what your waters are like.  Typical cover, water clarity, forage, depth, structure.  There are probably plenty of guys here that fish lakes much like yours and maybe even the same waters.

Also, what rods reels do you have?  Mabny of them may be suited for most bass fishing, some may not.

That way, we can suggest baits, etc. to start out with that may be better producers for your fishing.

Good luck!

I have a Shimano Clarus Series MH Extra Fast 6'6", Abu Garcia Revo S.

I fish clear and stained water. Manly submerged structure with some tree over hangs. Lots of docks, and in the 1' to 15' is were I hunt for 'em.

buy you some brown and green jigs then find some crawfish or chunks that fit the color of the jig skirt

Hi MN Basser,

As a newby I feel for you. There are so many choices. I've found lots of great advice here on the forum and in the acticles. You're at the right place.

With so many choices, you may want a plan to start filling your tackle box. I'm starting with hardbaits, knowing that there are certain types I want to get. By having a plan, I can keep my eyes peeled for sales and deals and not just purchase a ton of stuff that's cheap. I've already got more lipless cranks than I need (in the immediate future) :o

One of the consistent recommendations I've seen regards color. Your tackle should include colors match (or look natural) the bait in your area. This spring I've been working on hardbaits, getting 2 or 3 of each type in different colors.

- Silver - for sunny days and clear water

- Gold - for cloudy days and stained water

- Other - Chartruse, baby base, perch, trout etc. when other colors aren't working

I found that by initially limiting myself to just 3 colors I'm filling my box with more types of lures and a variety of sizes.

So far, my lucky bait has been the Silver & Black Bandit 100 crankbait. Good Luck!

Leon
