What would you throw ?

Featured Replies

I just found out a bout a pond that has ultra clear water . It has a deep drop offs on the edges of the pond the pond bottom is very rocky and has a few  fallen down trees as lay downs . If you could fish there what would you throw it it currently Mid October in  the mid west .  What would you throw ?

Your lake sounds similar to the lakes I fish down here. What state are you located in?

jerkbait...maybe swim a grub

Drop shot, jerkbait, underspin and a jig are a good start.

Clear water with a steep drop and rocky bottom sounds a lot like a strip pit.  Regardless, the fish  will most likely be suspending.  To find out what depth, work your way down the water column with cranks until you find them. If the bite dies off, swim a tube or jig through the same depth.

Jerkbait would be my first option, after that a fluke and from there it would depend on the conditions of the day. If the water is calm a drop shot for the finesse side of things and a swim jig for more of a power presentation. If you got wind, a small 1/4oz or 3/8oz spinnerbait with small willow blades and translucent color skirt retrieved fast could be a really killer but it really would depend on what type of weather conditions you get on that particular day.

I would be drawn to the cover . Being its clear water a "fast" retrieve with something like a small baitfish looking spinnerbait would be considered . After that I would try to coax fish with soft  plastics or jigs, probably going  small and natural . Then  I would start exploring deeper water with sinking lures trying to find shallower sections .

Burning crankbaits or small spinnerbaits should at least draw out fish.

Also ripping jerkbaits like your life depended on it can really create some awesome strikes in clear water.  Just dont slow down your retrieve if there is a follower.  You HAVE to speed it up or they will lose interest.

Dropshot, shakeyhead and a jig.
