Ravenous Bluegill and Green Sunfish on a Rebel Crickhopper

Last evening I was out in pursuit of bass at a local pond.  The bass weren't cooperating very well BUT I could see disturbances on the surface film.  If figured if I can't beat 'em, I might as well join em so I tied on a Rebel Crickhopper (essentially a hard plastic grasshopper with a diving bill) and chased sunnies instead.  In some instances they (especially the crappie) grabbed it while I was swimming it but by-in-large they charged up to the surface to grab it.  It was like how they behave when they are on their nest in the spring.  I lost many as the hooks were just too small to grab and hold effectively but I still caught quite a few.  Anyway, it's still not too late for some late season panfish for those who appreciate such things.

Green sunnies show no fear.

Bluegill amaze me. This one would have been fun on an ultralight. Instead it takes a bomber 4a that I've caught 17" bass on.. wasn't much of a fight with my 10lb test. But. Interesting anyway. I was burning it. Rip and pause. Apparently I crossed it's "territory"

This is the biggest one I've ever caught. These 2 pictures are the only ones I have of bluegill. Lol. Not usually picture worthy IMO.. but this one was HUGE. I caught it on a "crappie magnet" 1.5" split tail grub paired with a matching jighead.

The grub didn't even hit the bottom..

Amazing how ambitious some of these little fish can be. This one went after a bait almost the same length as the fish. Was flippin into willows with a 3/0 trokar hook and a YUM christie craw. I was targeting a trophy bass, ended up with an oversized swimbait. Savage!

Lol good hook set though

This one went after a walking bait almost as big as he was.   Don't even know how he got on the hook since the treble is bigger than his mouth!

Haha! Yep all about the fundamentals. The hook about ripped right through. Surprised I wasn't reeling in a pair of lips by the time it got to the boat.

This is probably the best one I've seen! Well done. This would be a really funny topic to get more participation on. I'm sure every bass angler has experienced this many times. Smallest fish vs biggest bait.

It comes up pretty often. Sunfish are aggressive, I haven't had one take a run at a bait like this smallmouth did though. Bait is a Deps 175 Slide Swimmer for reference.

Lol that's insane! No way that smallie actually thought he could eat that bait. Must have just been picking a fight. Scrappy little dude

Like I said in my previous post, it comes around pretty often. Here's the most recent one I found.
