Reel bearings?

Featured Replies

Hawgrech, Big Green Fish, Hedgehog, etc. Gonna replace the bearings in my Lew's TP1H. Need recommendations. Thanks

as long as you use abec 5 or 7, either one will be great. I've used both and can't tell the difference between em.

Is there a reason you have settled on these two types of bearings?

Has the reel been deep cleaned and / or super tuned? The advantages of any bearing choice are less to a clean reel than one out of the box. If you're certain about bearings, ABEC5 are the best bang for the buck. I have Bocas for $9.95 ea

I replaced the plastic spool bushings in my 1981 Daiwa Procaster PS10 with Boca orange seal, ABEC7? bearings trying to bring this old but still good reel inline with my newer reels.  I did before and after cast comparisons.  What I found was that with new bearings the spool would free turn forever but casting distance was just a little farther than with the bushings.  The difference was the casting effort; less effort, same distance.  If I tried to cast with the same effort as i did with the plastic bushings, I could not get my thumb back on the spool fast enough and backlash.  Now I do cast lighter weight lures better now than before but no great casting distance has been achieved with the new super speed bearings.  This reel has only one spool braking system:  the tension knob on the left/handle side and maybe with practice greater distance can be reached.

This exactly right. The easier casting leads to better accuracy but distance gains are ancillary.

Anyone know if Matt, at Big Green Fish, is still in business? I ordered some bearings, and, can't get in touch with him. Thanks

No idea.  I generally deal straight with Smooth Drags.
