I tried searching for this but couldn't find anything. What are your thoughts on using generic high performance synthetic grease vs fishing specific grease like Ardent? I can't buy reel grease locally and don't feel like paying $24 to ship to Canada. 

There nothing special about reel grease except for the label. Super lube is a good synthetic. Marine grease like yamalube works well too.

That's right. Btw if you use a greased drag, they require actual drag grease like cals or Shimano and either of them can double as gear grease.
