offseason kayak upgrades

Featured Replies

does anyone have any input on what would be some good upgrades I could make for my kayak this winter. I plan on finding a way to attach a milk crate more securely and add some rod holders to it. I also want to attach some pretty sturdy rope to the front of the boat to help get my fat butt to stand up. I would like to make a homemade anchor trolley system but would like some advice on that. The kayak I have is an ascend fs12t.

It's been a while since I look through them, but there used to be a lot of great pics of yak upgrades on pinterest.

Other than suggesting you look at pics and videos, it is hard to suggest.  Kayak accessorizing can be a pretty personal thing.  Aside from basics such as crate, trolley, rod holders......it can get mind numbing what you can put on.  Depends on what you've found you're lacking.

I used a trolley kit from Yak-Gear, but it would likely be cheaper to buy the pulleys, cleats, line and DIY.

Quite a few of the upgrades you want to do can be sourced from Yakattack.

Get a graph if you don't have one already.

I put silent traction system on the floor. Was the best upgrade/mod I did. Noise travels fast. Especially, it seemed, in shallow water where I spent quite a bit of time.

Also keeps stuff from sliding all over the place.

Thinking about it more, the silent traction system is a must to minimize noise on the water. That kayak acts like a big plastic drum with so much surface area touching the water....actually more like a big plastic megaphone.

And as j Franco mentioned it keeps things from slipping...including your feet, so arguably good from a safety aspect.

Good luck and always wear that pfd.

That's how I mounted my trolley on my Commander.  Nice to have the gear track along the entire side of the boat.
