Help Picking new line/knots for my 3 combo "quiver"

Featured Replies

So far I've used normal Power Pro tied to swivel, with 12-18 inch mono leader and have been very satisfied, but want to change leader.  Here are my Combos/ techniques.  All Uni knots... for backing on reel, main line to swivel, leader to hook.  Uni knots have never failed me unless I ultra-lited a big fish or hastily tried to un-snag myself.

1.  stradic fk 1000, Avid X medium light 6'9" X-fast, mostly for wacky weightless zoom worms on circle hooks.

Thinking PowerPro Super Slick 15 lb marine blue.  With seguar Finesse Flouro 8 lb.

Curado 200i, St Croix mojo inshore medium light.  mostly crankbaits, football jigs, buzzbaits, spinner baits.

Thinking PowerPro maxcuattro aqua green 40lb.  Not sure on what flouro leader.

Curado 300 ej.  Bass X 7'4" MH mod fast.  For large lures, or bottom fishing with live bait.

Thinking same PP max 40lb as other Curado.  Not sure on what leader/lb test.

Any insight?  I want the best... Wish I could buy american made.... Is there an option?

What would you do differently?

First make sure you are using the double uni knot. I use that one exclusively and it holds up to big stripers, bass and big cats.  There are plenty of other good knots, like a FG knot, but I use the double uni or uni to uni knot. I usually go 5 to 7 wraps through the loop/line.

On the mojo, I might suggest going with a quality copolymer line instead of braid for your cranks, spinnerbaits etc. If you do go braid P Line CXX in 10 pound test makes a good choice for leaders. I would use about a 4 foot leader. Suffix 832 in like 20 or 30 pound test might be good braid choice for the cranks,, spinnerbaits, football head jigs. Not as good for the buzzbaits.  Buzzbaits I prefer either mono like Big Game, or a copolymer line.

For your third rig I would go with the Power Pro Spectra in green maybe in either 30 or 40 pound test and if I needed a leader again I would use the P line 10 pound test. That stuff breaks at around 24 pounds in tests.

I do main line to swivel uni, then uni to swivel leader, and uni knot to hook/lure.   So my leader is only as long as tip of pole to hook keeper.

i always use double uni for tying line (like my backing on reel) but is line twist not a problem if I forgo the swivel?

For wacky, spinners, and live bait?

Don't think I've ever used swivels on baitcast gear, except when carolina rigging.  Seems like 18" leader to a swivel would be a pain to cast.  Swivel through the top guides?  I understand why you'd do it on the Stradic, but I still find it necessary with braid, since it doesn't have the tendency to go all slinky on ya.   I think you're good with the braid choices, but I don't know about the same rod for cranks and jigs; but if it works for you, I think you're ok.  Some here don't like braid with cranks, but some do.

One thing I wouldn't do is use 40lb braid on a ML rod. You're one sharp tug away from buying yourself a new rod. Just my opinion though.

I'd have to agree here. I'd go 20lb braid for a finesse bait casting setup.

As for the swivel leader, I would personally shy away from that but if it's been working for you, more power to you man.
