Best rod to pair with new baitcaster

Featured Replies

I recently got a new Lews Speed Spool LFS SSG1H. Looking for the best rod to pair it with. Suggestions? Any are very much appreciated.

What are you planning on using the rod for?  What's your budget?

I'd like to use it with jigs and/ or top water, crank baits

My budget is around 100$

The e6x is almost twice his budget. All 3 of those techniques I would have 3 different setups for.Your budget I'd look at St.Croix mojo,Abu Garcia Veritas or Vendetta and Duckett Ghost. You could even buy 2 Berkley shocks. For jigs id use a 7' MHF,topwater 6'6 MF and for cranks a 7' MM.But those are just my preference. But its a starting point.

Thank you for your suggestions.  I really appreciate it. I'm new into this and really wanting to learn all I can. Thanks again

I agree that I would (and do) use three different setups for the techniques you listed.  If I was going to try to tackle all three with one rode it would be a 6'6'' MHF.  Maybe a Fenwick HMG or I think FFO tackle has the aetos for 88.88 and they have a 6'8'' MHF that would be a great start that could tackle a lot of techniques.

I forgot about the HMG.Another one is a Falcon Bucoo

I loved my bucoo until I shut it in the door

Sorry, when I posted that there was no budget listed. I just know its a great 'do it all' casting rod.

Cabelas has the Silverhawk for 69.99 in store

Congrats on the Speed Spool.  They are the best bang for your buck.

I have tried a lot of combos but everything I buy now is a Lews on a St. Croix Mojo.  I have found them to be the best value for your money.  You get a very high end combo for a relatively reasonable price.

I've really like the Bass Pro Carbonlite rods. 7'MM for cranks and a 7'MH for jigs / spinnerbaits.

The techniques you listed generally work better on at least two different rods, and three would be better.  If I had to pick two, it would be a 6'9" medium heavy casting rod for topwater and jigs, and a 7' medium powered rod with a moderate action.  An all around rod would be a 6'9 or 7' medium heavy powered rod with a fast action.  Check out the Fenwick aotos rod from FFO, it retails for $150 but is on sale for about $73.  There is always a sale going on there (right now its 20% off over fourty dollars) in addition.

As many have said we have been afflicted with bass-itis longer than you, so we would all have a ton of rod reel combos in our arsenal. For an all around rod their are some good choices. Start with looking at a Dobyns Fury. These are quality rod blanks with quality components. Take a look at a Dobyns Fury FR 704C. Fury's run a bit lighter than other brands in their same spec range.  Another rod to consider would be a Falcon Bucoo micro series rod called the Trap Caster. Go read the Tackletour review of a rod from Powell. It was called a Powell Max 683 CEF. They now make it in the Powell Max 3D series and it is still a great all around rod. I own one and love it. Realize all of these suggestions are compromises, but they will do what you want. Then as you grow you will enjoy whichever one of these you purchase and target your next rod to do what you think this rod compromises on most. I will say all three of these are great rods.

I appreciate all the response's guys! I ended up getting a duckett ghost 7' MH. The fella at the store had a Lews and put it together for me to try out and I really liked the way it feels.  Thanks for all the help. I'll definitely take all the options you've given me into consideration for future purchases
