Are old gold carbonlites still worth it?

Featured Replies

Looking for someone who's handled the old gold carbonlites. I know they have a pretty big following, and one of my old coworkers is selling his for $75. I know him well enough that I know he keeps his stuff in good condition, and it was never fished much at that. For the price is it worth it? Am I better off ponying up an extra $25 for one of the many good $100 reels instead (I'm currently a Lews guy)?

Yes, $75 seems fair.  Talk to Goose about it.. its the same reel basically as the PQ.  Check out the condition of the brake drum and brakes before you buy it.  I'm working on one now and the cost for parts is starting to add up a fast.

Several years ago I bought 2 reconditioned reels as a package deal for $130 from a guy who was able to make his selection from all the reels that were sitting on the shelf.  Definitely worth $65 to me.  I'd even be willing to pay the $75.  Mine are spooled with 6# mono and used for light lures.  Absolutely no problem throwing a 3/16 oz. Shad Rap with these reels.  Dual braking is nice.  I'd go for it.

wouldn't do it.

I might offer $75 for a BNIB Carbonlite. BUT, I wouldn't offer over $65 or so for one in excellent condition with little to no wear to the brake drum and brake shoes.  If the drum or shoes are worn, I wouldn't make an offer at all.

They are decent reels. I think they made an impact due to they're weight/price point at a time that reels that light typically cost 300 bones. At the minumum with the cult following they have you should  get you're money back if it's not for you.
