Reel help

Featured Replies

Hey everyone I have a quantum e770pt reel on a 7foot heavy bass mojo.i use this as my primary frog rod, but the thing is is that the brakes are really touchy. When going from a frog to a jig it's hard to dial it in so there's no backlash. Do you think that if I had it cleaned and lubed it would work better? Or should I just start looking for a replacement reel?

Can't answer that question, but send Mike at Delaware Valley Tackle an email or call him.  I'm sure he can give you an answer.  Are you attached to the reel?  Sounds to me like you have an excellent reason to buy another reel.  Nope.  I am not related to the Bait Monkey.  :teeth:

EDIT:  I will say that I have reels that I can make big changes (relatively speaking) on lure weight without having to change reel settings.

Ok how heavy of a frog?

1\4 - 5\8

So are your saying you backlash when switching from a 1/2 oz frog to a 1/2 oz jig or are you backlashing going from a 5/8 oz frog to a 1/4 oz jig?

A clean reel will definitely max its potential. A Hvy power st Croix is a very stout rod. It may not load efficiently causing to muscle a cast with the lighter bait. The resulting high speed launch and rapid deceleration is the perfect recipe for a backlash or over run.
