Drop Shot Weights

Featured Replies

Tungsten is too expensive for me to use as a drop shot weight. I used steel dipsey weights, but they rusted my whole terminal ankle box, and weren't very sensitive. I have 1/4 oz voss cylinder weights. they work great, except for the fact that I can't attach them properly, they always cut the line. I found a 1/4 oz lead sinker lying in my boat one day. that has worked amazing, it isn't drop shot specific, but i can tie a knot and it is super good. What is the problem? Can I get away with 1/4 oz weights all around? That seems to work well for me in 4' - 30'. I may consider just using the .25 oz sinkers, even though it might not be best. and what about cylinder vs round vs tear drop?

Check out original manufacturer bass store on Facebook for tungsten weights. They are very reasonably priced. The even have the weights stamped on the weight. Regarding your question it depends what your bottom content is like the cylinder shaped weights are supposed to be better at getting hung up less than the tear drop weights.

I just ordered 15 3/16 weights. $12.80 including shipping from Japan.

Thanks for help with the name. Whatever they are called their product is good.

Some crimps tend to cut line easy, other crimps offer some resistance then lets the line fit snug.  What # test are you using?  I buy my dropshot weights in bulk from eBay sellers, they use the gunmetal/nickel finish crimps that seem to work getter than the brass/gold crimps that I've had issues with cutting line.  You also might want to go to a heavier line on your dropshot, I use 8# and don't see any issues with declining strikes.  One other thing with the cylinder weights is that some people will bend them into a ) shape with pliers to make it less likely to hang up.

8 pound seauguar invisx

I use 8 or 10# Seaguar InvisX too, it should be the crimp on the brand of dropshot weight you're using.  Switch to a different brand and you should be fine.

Water Grimlin lead bullet weight are less the 7c each (15 pkg 99c). Use a bullet weight with a small split shot to hold it onto the end of the line. This is what we used a decade before "split shot" weights came along.

Tom

If lead is legal just tie a cheap casting sinker on with a palomar knot. Works fine for me. We have not many rocks and more wood so the hook gets snagged, not the weight.
