Heading sensor

Featured Replies

Was wondering if anyone mounted The Heading sensor on their boat for the ultrex, if so where is the best location. Was trying to take the step out of leaving it loose and moving it all over the boat until I find a good location.

The best location will be as close to the trolling motor as you can mount it

Thanks slonezp, that's what I was thinking. When I asked Minn Kota support they seemed unsure. Just keep away from metal.

When looking for the best position for your heading sensor - what you do not want is 'interference'.

A couple of ways to "find" it -

One is to mount it and them go out and see if your unit works right - not the best option unless you're mounting is temporary. (think velco)

Second is to fire up all your electronics & go around the boat to each "mounting" spot with a small hand held compass.  (they are cheap and not a bad idea to keep on the boat afterwards anyway - as long as you know how to read & use it)

Determine an accurate North direction with it before getting on board and then test each spot to see if the compass goes to spinning around.

A Spinning compass needle is  Bad & NO Spinning is Good.

Humminbird has specific instructions on how to calibrate the sensor once installed

My dealer mounted the heading sensor on the front deck, away from all of the metal on the trolling motor.

I have a couple of buddies with new Nitro Z18s. Their dealers mounted the heading sensor underneath the deck in a recess under a cupholder. Supposedly, the recess was designed to accomodate sensor pucks.
