First sub 40 degree bass

Featured Replies

After a 2.5 month hibernation, I went out on a small local lake following a 2 day warming trend. Water temp was still 39 degrees in the shallows but I was more interested in trying out my first curado, and my new dobyns champ xp glass rod. It ended up being a really fun time.

I tried jerkbaits and drop shot at first from about 5-15 feet for the first hour. I didn't have any luck so I switched to a silent lipless crank in a muted crawfish color. I found a sprig of green with the lipless, so I counted it down to the same depth and caught a small average fish, typical for this lake. I cast again with the lipless to the same spot and picked another one up. I noticed that both bass were wearing crawfish lipstick, so after another 15 minutes with no more luck I switched to a bitsy bug in GP with a chunk trailer. In this small bit of grass that I found, I was able to pick up 7 more small fish in the  next hour. I didn't catch anything big but man it felt good to get back on the water.

The first trip out after winter is  always fun when you catch a few and get to demo some new gear.
