Fishing line advice

Featured Replies

I have two rods, one baitcaster and one spinning rod. Currently both are spooled with mono. 8lb on the spinning real and 14lb on the baitcaster. I fish mainly ponds and small lakes from the shore. Both need new line. Should I stick with mono for both or go to maybe 20lb braid on the baitcaster? The spinning rod is for the more finesse stuff and the baitcaster is everything else.  Don't do much fishing in super heavy cover. Don't think either rod would handle it well. Any advice would be appreciated

Most everyone will want to know the power and action of your rods. They also should say a given range for line weight too.

i would say yea braid on your spinning rod, but leave a little old mono on there for backing so the braid doesn't slip on the spool. Then use a fc leader.

Baitcaster do you use for cranks and plastics or what kind of fishing?

I've got the same setup, one of each. I have 20 pound braid on my spinning reel, mostly because there's no line twist with it, and I'm running 50 pound braid on my baitcaster. I'm sure you can run lighter on the baitcaster, it just happened to be what I had handy.

The baitcaste is a Abu Garcia Silver Max - medium heavy , fast action - use it mainly for crankbaits, some jigs, bigger jerkbaits, and larger plastics

The spinning outfit is a medium power, fast action - mainly for finesse stuff - shaky heads, ned rigs, ect

Stay with what you have been using unless you are not happy with the performance.

Good advice. I do like what I have been using but I also like trying different setups. However, I am not going to be changing line all the time either. Don't want that hassle not do I want a ton of rods to carry around either.
