G. Loomis Fiber Blend Crankbait Rod 6' 6" ML

Featured Replies

I am trying to find a replacement rod for my Skeet Reese 7' S glass cranking rod. It's way too heavy, not very sensitive and I'm just not the hugest fan. I bought it because I was just getting into crankin, and needed something fairly cheap. I found a good deal on the G. Loomis Fiber Blend Crankbait Rod 6' 6" ML. I will be using it mainly in open water, very light vegetation. I will be throwing light cranks mostly, with some medium sized squarebills. I'm only 5'4" if that matters. What worries me is how small it is compared to most of my other 7'+ rods. What are your thoughts? I found a good deal on this, so I'd like to get it if I can find a good use for it.

Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate having this community to share their thoughts and opinions on matters like these for amateurs like myself. lol

It is personal preference, but I found that rod to feel like a wet noodle.

I went with the e6x  and am much happier....I am sure you will find many that disagree

Mostly due to the medium light rating, or the moderate action? My skeet reese is a wet noodle if I've ever felt one! lol

It was the action, and bend.....I just prefer graphite rods with technique based tapers

Isn't that rod a graphite rod that is technique based on light cranking?

Also do G. Loomis rods run fairly heavy like St. Croix rods do as well? I really want this rod due to the deal, but don't want to get it if it's not going to suit my needs for light squarebills and other crankbaits.

Although I have not fished with any of the loomis crankbait rods, I have a rod rack full of the other Loomis models and can tell you that Loomis rods typically do not run heavier than their ratings. their lure weights for the rod are pretty much bang on. if you go higher or lower it doesn't cast as well. put something on that is at or in the range of the rating of the rod and it will sail. St. Croix tends to run heavier, where their medium is more like other's medium heavy. But the Loomis's typically run true to their ratings/actions

I have no background with that rod, but I wouldn't hesitate to get a 6'6".  I am 6'3" and my preference is a 6'6" rod.  I don't like anything over 7 foot.  Throw what makes sense to you.  I love the g loomis IMX series and I have heard great things about the E6x.  I also love the g loomis jerkbaits series and it is only 6'3".

Does anyone else have any comment about using a 6'6" GLX medium lights crankbait rod for throwing small crankbaits and smaller to midsized square bills?

The ML rating on a cranking rod generally describes a limp, wet noodle.  However, the recommended lure rating of 1/4-1/2 suggests it will fish like a M rod.  It would probably make a good small crankbait, topwater and jerkbait rod, among other things.  If the deal is that good, you shouldn't have too much trouble recouping most of your money should you not like it.
