baitcaster issue-need help.

Recommended Posts

I was given a quantum tournament bait caster and had a bad backlash so went back to the truck and upon walking the line out I pulled the rod and reel off the truck bed and it hit the ground and broke the foot. I epoxied the foot and it worked great. even pulled up a limb from the bottom today and still held.

Now the issue-----I set the brakes on it to just let the lure hit fall and had 0 backlashes and even got some very good distance. about the 3-4 cast it would backlash very bad and you could hear the spool spin/buzz. I would pick out the backlash and get the line tight and check the small knob by the drag and it was now turn all the way off. I would tighten it back up to where the lure slightly fell and again 3-4th cast its like the brakes not even on and the knob is all the way loose. I would set it at tight and turn maybe a 1/8-1/4 turn and all was well but turning the brakes back tight would take 2-3 full turns.

what would cause this?

A reel that needs replacement or repair.

59.99

That knob adjusts the spool tension. It should never just back off on its own.  I personally would not waste my money sending that reel out for repair.

You can get a decent reel like an Abu Garcia Silvermax from Fisherman's Factory Outlet for $38.88.  It regularly runs $59.99 at places like Dicks and Bass Pro.

Another option is to go over to Gander Mountain. They have the Lews Mach Speed for sale at $99.00.  They also have a $20 off a purchase of $100 or more. So I would choose to buy the reel and just for safety add a Strike King Bitsy flip jig for around $2.29.  That makes your reel cost around $80.  They also offer free ground shipping.

Thanks. I've never used one before and thought man if I have to keep adjusting the tension screw this. I enjoyed using it the first few casts until it would go free spool on me. I'll pickup something soon to replace it.

Have you ever ordered from fishermen outlet?

You should set that once and never touch it again unless you throw a different weight bait.

Like if I am fishing a 3/8 ounce jig and a creature trailer, and decide to change to a much heavier bait like a 1/2 or 3/4 football head jig I will have to readjust it, if I simply get snagged and tie on a similar weight jig then readjustment is unnecessary.

As for FFO, no not personally, but I know guys that have. They are okay to deal with.  All they do is buy bulk leftover inventory from warehouses or discontinued stock from manufacturers.

Go to the hardware store and grab a rubber o ring to fit the threads the cast control goes on. That should keep the cap adjustment from moving. There was probably one there at some point.

Put just over the knob to keep from spinning?

In addition to the excellent suggestions from other posters, DO NOT try to over cast the lure. Trying to get too much distance can easily result in more birds nests. The better quality the reel, the less likely to have as many backlash issues. Shimano Caenan is a much upgraded version than their previous model of the same name and won't break the bank. There are a few good baitcasters available that are very affordable. Get the best you can afford and you'll soon forget the few extra bucks you spent.

thanks for the info. The reel was doing great the first few casts.

what I did was turn the tension knob all the way tight until it stopped and then turn it slightly until the lure fell very slow. I think I turned the knob maybe 1/8 turn for the sweet spot. on the 3rd or so cast the knob would now take about 3 full rotations to turn it back to fully tight. it was wiggling itself loose for some reason. I would get maybe 25-30yard casts the first 3-4 casts and not a sign of backlash and then all hell breaks loose.

No it goes at the base of the threads on the side plate and the cap snugs up against it.
