Spinning rod for skipping shakes heads

Featured Replies

I am looking to replace my current spinning rod (fenwick smallmouth 6'9"xf) that a broke under rod cleat (sad day).  Do any of you prefer a longer spinning rod for skipping?  I was debating between getting the new Fenwick aetos 6'6" vs the 7' and feel like I can skip the longer rods better but may give up a little accuracy.  Just curious if any of you have any issues with accuracy on a longer rod.  Thanks

Welcome aboard......

i am sure many will chime in, but shorter will give you a bit more acuracy but the limited skipping I have done was with a 7.  I don't know about most, but I find skipping easier with a crankbait rod, but may be in the minority.  Additionally, I hate to give up distance for a technique I seldom use.

sorry to be little help......just saying welcome

I don't skip much in freshwater but I do it often when I am in Florida fishing mangroves. I use a 7 foot rod with no issues, but if I was going to get one for freshwater use just for skipping I would go with the 6'8" medium XF Mojo.

Welcome aboard!!!

They are usually labeled walleye rods but a 6'3" mxf works for me. Mine is of the St. Croix denomination, but others make them.

I take the advice of guys like Mark Zona & Andy Montgomery and opt for a shorter rod, not a longer one.  The most consistent skipping motion is more of an underhand cast, so a shorter rod allows you to make that cast without hitting the water with the rod tip or having to side arm it.

The actual length is kind of determined by your height & the boat you fish from.  A boat that sits up high off the water can afford a longer rod while a johnboat or Pond Prowler that sits low calls for a shorter rod.
