Ever buy a new boat out of state?

Featured Replies

I know this may be a crazy question but i was wondering if anyone here has ever bought a NEW boat out of state, preferably if you live in Florida.  I have found i can save about 4 to 5 grand by buying my boat out of state a little farther north.  Has anyone ever done this and if so what did it involve as far as registering, title, taxes, etc.?  any help, tips, suggestions, opinions are greatly appreciated!  thanks.

:-?

I have never purchased a new boat/vehicle out of state but I have heard that some states make you pay their states sales tax on the new boat/vehicle on the day you buy it at the dealership.  Not sure if its true but I have heard that before, so that is something to check into.

i live in mass and bought a new boat in ny..i was charged mass taxes and did not pay any ny taxes..all registering(boat and trailer was done in mass....the laws may be different for different states but i did not pay any ny sales tax...

I'm in RI and also bought my last new boat out of NY but many people around here shoot up to NH to take advantage of the zero sales tax.

Low Budget,  wont they have to pay their states sales tax once they go to register their boat?? (after getting no tax in NH)

I bought a merc out of state and paid there sales tax which was less than NC taxes but

a engine doesn't have a title .

Almost all states boat registration regulations allow you to register a boat in almost any other state other than the one where you reside.  Almost all states regulations state the boat needs to be registered in the state of most usage. So if you live in PA and you boat spends most of it's time in the water in DE it should be registered there.

I do not know how they can find out how much time you boat spends in the water in each state unless it is moored there full time.

I just copied the above from a post I made on another site.

So now how does that pertain to this.

I live in PA. Bought a boat in DE. DE has no sales tax. I registered it in DE with my PA address. After that registration expired I just changed the registration to PA. Because I was going to "use" it there more. Just be careful. Some states will make you pay there sales tax or if their tax is higher, the difference if you make the "move" to soon. Some states make you wait 60~90 days others a whole year.

Here is a great read on the subject http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/199364_boatoffshore12.html

That applies to states where they have a use tax on boats where they send you a bill for 5,6 or 10% of the boats value every year.  I know VA and CA are some of those states. But has you can see if you play your cards right you can save a few bucks.
