Winter fishing/lower unit

Featured Replies

When you guys fish during the winter how do you keep your lower unit from freezing after you are done fishing?

Here is what I do but I am looking for other great info.

lower the motor to drain all water

Raise and lower moter while turning steering wheel to try to remove more water.

Turn motor over a few times to blow out most excess water.(I figure an impeller is cheaper then a lower unit).

Is there anything I am missing or need to change?

Some guys pull the water pump gauge sender line loose and drain the water from it. I've never had an issue with it.

Check your lower unit grease often. In cold weather seals have a tendancy to contract and water could get in with grease. That could be a big problem. I top mine off every week during the cold temps. Grease is cheap, lower units cracked are expensive, dumb looks after forgetting to check it, priceless.
