Hello, I was using my Shimano Curado 200 for the first time this weekend up at the Lake, I have the reel spooled with #20 pound mono and it was perfect for a few hours. Now, what I think happened is the breaking system cover wasn't closed all the way and when I went to cast, the line came off the reel to far and made its way into the breaking system. It was a tangled mess and thankfully, we got it undone but I'm just curious why or how this happens or if this has happened to anyone else or if it's a common problem. Thanks.

This has never happened to me on the cast.

I'm having a difficult time envisioning this.  The line did what?

The one side of the reel on the Shimano Curado, the side with the breaking system that opens up, when I went to cast the line came of the reel and some of the line I would guess when coming off the reel got into the breaking system area.

Obviously not physically impossible if it happened but when line feeds off a spool, unless it backlashes, it feeds off in a more or less linear fashion (toward the first rod guide).  The only guess I can make is that you had a vicious backlash (professional overrun) and line managed to find its way there.  But still, it's somewhat hard to envision.

How you managed to create a large enough gap between the spool and the frame for 20 lb mono to go into is beyond me, but somehow you did, oh wait, I think I see it, Flyers fan? 

 

Seriously, it sounds like against all odds you managed not to close the side plate correctly, it's extremely rare. What I have seen sometimes is closing the side plate, and bending of jamming the little centrifugal shoes. Also I have seen line caught in the worm gear/pawl, damaging it or the idler gears.. HECKSTALL!!!!, sorry, I could' resist.

Not a fan of hockey actually ;), but I'm just going to take it as a freaky incident and hope it doesn't happen again.

Once you get it all sorted out, loosen the spool tension knob until there is a little latteral play, then tighten it until there is none. That should be a good place for it for all but small and poor casting lures. i find 2 or 3 "on" brakes works best for me. What lures are we fishing for with 20 lb mono in  Philly/South jersey?

I was up at Lake Wallenpaupack with my dad and friend of his, we were fishing keitech swimbaits. I have a lews spooled with #30 pound braid but I was having problems catching as he said the fish can see the braid. I had brought my brand new setup that wasn't spooled up yet so before the second day, he has some line that he uses on all his setups so that's what he put on mine. I'm fairly inexperienced with line so should I not be using the #20 pound mono?

I can see no reason why you can't-unless you are punching super thick moss/slop.
