Able to put a deck/floor in a 14' v-hull?

Featured Replies

I have a chance to pick up a 14' v-hull w/ trailer for $400.  If I got it I would really like to be able to put a small front and rear deck with storage.  I was planning on just laying them and connecting to the metal across seats already there.  My main question is would it still be stable enough?  I don't plan on taking it on any big water and mostly no wake lakes where I will encounter little to none chop on the water.  Thanks

P.S. Does $400 for a 14' v-hull w/ trailer in decent shape(no holes, leaks, etc.) sound like a good deal?

This question has been brought up before on this board. All shorter Vhulls are susceptable to being tippy if one or two anglers began fishing off of raised casting decks.  The best suggestion is to put a couple of temporary platforms on the boat and take it to the nearest water and do a dry run with you and another person to see if it's stabil at rest.

A deal? How about a STEAL!!!!!!

You done good!!

Decks are absolutely possible with that model. As Cart stated though, a test run to see what your weight is like when the center of gravity is raised won't hurt and is very easy to do.  There are 5 or 6 guys here that have some really trick ones in that size. search for posts with titles of "jon boat" in "boating"

As I look back over my post, I realize that the dry run may not be if the boat is too tippy.  ;D

My first boat was found floating on a lake. I turned over to the police(don't ever do this) report it as found and get a document.

14 ft. Tin Tippy with a homemade interior and a 20 horse and a 28 lb Minn Kota man was I living big.

They are tippy I put a butt seat in, it help never did carpet but that would help.

BPS and West Marine ect. have all the nice stuff when I did mine I'd never heard of BPS.

Hey, I have a 14' ModV-Hull.  Mine is very sturdy.  I didnt make the decks leve with the top of the boat, i just rested them on the seats, heres a few pictures to give you an idea.

My decks lift right out.  No straps, or attatchments, and they stay put.  I'm very happy w/ them, only wish i had a nice foot controlled trolling motor, fish finder, and a live well.  Maybe next summer.

PM if you would like any help, or have any questions.

I don't really want it level with the top of the boat like a regular bass boat.  I am looking to just rest it on the seats like wheasle did.  I just want something that is flat to be able to stand on, have some storage, and a livewell.  I will probably paint it.  Whats the best paint for painting a boat?  Thanks for the advice everyone.  This boat should be great for the smaller no wake 5 m.p.h lakes I have around my area.

I have a 14' V-hull similar to wheasle's with a casting deck at the front and rear and a lower sectio in the middle.  Not tippy at all and I use it on the upper Potomac.

As you said, I'd recommend that you make the decks so they fit right over the existing seatsat the front and rear with a lower section in the middle between the seats.  Put a floor and carpets in there to keep the noise down.

I have a swivel seat in the front and rear on a short (13"-15") pedestal to keep the CG lower when were moving.  That being said, I can stand and cast without any difficulty.  The only time it gets tippy at all is if I move fron the front to the back and I'm to one side.  Then again I'm a big guy so just about anything would be tippy!

That's all a long way of saying..go for it.  These kind of boats ain't fancy but they do all I need to do.

Tippy is relative I've been in a 20 ft bassboat for 20 years so 14 ft tippys are tippy but back in the day I was liven large fished everywere for everything. Even puts some Downriggers on it and trolled for Salmon on Lake Ontario (not real Smart). By the time I started tourney fishing in my late twentys I was a pretty good rec. fisherman.

Burner to ground with a TIN TIPPY.

Well I found another 14' w/ trailer for the same range so I am going to take a look at it and see which one is better.  Does anyone have any information on the paint to use?  Or any other info?  Thanks
