Transducer location on a bass boat.

Featured Replies

Good Day to everyone, I am new to these forums and look forward to a lot of great discussion. In the next week or so I will get my profile completed!

Anyway, I was googling information about transducer mounting location and came across this website.

I just bought a 1990 Champion 201 DCR bass boat with a 200hp mercury optimax outboard, I upgraded to a Raymarine fish finder and from what I understand, in order to properly use down/side imaging you shouldn't use a thru-hull transducer. It would be awesome to have everything work at speed but would at least like the depth to show without cutting out. Speed will come through GPS and the imaging isn't important at high speed really....

I will get pics up later of the back of my boat, it is stepped as most bass boats are. Just wanting it to read reliably at speed, any info helps as I am a rookie when it comes to bass boats!

Not familiar with your sonar unit so can't reply with any experience.

Most side/down imaging sonar transducers are rectangular units that are length wise mounted flush with your hulls planning surface. You should have mounting instructions supplied with your new unit.

Drill holes about the same diameter as the screw minor dia, use 316 series SST screws and 3M 5200 marine sealant. You can use a 1 X 4 flat board on the plane surface between the strikes about 16" Off centerline on the drivers side, depending on where there is a flat surface paralell to the pad. Set the TD on the board and mark where the holes should be.

Welcome to the BR site.

First welcome to Bass Resource and that is a nice boat.  I would do a quick you tube search and watch some videos.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Much appreciated. I am working on getting my images uploaded. I emailed them to myself from my phone in hopes that I can shrink the size of the photo to upload it. When watching videos and reading articles there is just so many different ideas and opinions of what works and doesn't. Hoping some experts might be able to point me in the right direction after posting some pics

Welcome to the forum!

I can't help with your transducer issues as I use different electronics and just wanted to say Hello.

HELLO!

Lots of good stuff here!

I installed my SI transducer on the lowest transom step with its bottom edge 1/8" below the planing surface of the boat, as per the instructions.  About 12-14" away from the motor while avoiding any of the bottom strakes.  It has worked flawlessly for 8 years and has never been kicked up or damaged.  It will show depth at any speed up to the WOT of 62mph.
