RODS ON DECK WHILE TRAILERING

Featured Replies

Hello,

What do you think about keeping the rods on the boat deck using the black rubber straps while trailering down the road.  I am not sure they will fit in the rod box.

Seems unsecure to me.  You could pull up to anybody and they could easily jump out and unstrap and steal rods while at a stop light.  You never know who pulls up next to you.

i do it but i don't make alot af stops between the house and the ramp and if i do the boat doesn't leave my sight.

I do it, and so does my fishing partner. No problems yet, but I don't let them out of my sight. If I were planning to make stops, I'd lock 'em in my vehicle.

I do not do it. I put my rods in the rod box when I am done fishing. I store everything before heading to the ramp. All I have to do is put it on the trailer, put the motor toter & the boat straps on & go

If I couldn't get them in the box and I knew I was heading to the lake without stopping I wouldn't have a problem with it.  Add in a stop and forget it, I'd put them in the truck.

i have a jon boat so i put them under the benches and you cant really see um. never had a problem with it, but if i stop im putting em somewhere safe.

I put them in my rod locker.  I don't want dust and dirt from the road getting in my reels.  My driveway is gravel and I spin sometimes getting up it.  I also think you get dirt and dust from the highway as well.  Just my opinion.

In my big boat they stay in the rod locker, but in my small boat they stay ondeck; however, I travel with a cover on my boats always so dirt and dust is not an issue.

Security? well if I am spending the night I take things out of both. My rod locker doesn't lock.  If I am stopping somewhere, I keep a close eye on it. With the covers on the boat  people seem to leave it alone. I have had no problems with the covers on.

I have had stuff taken from a boat before. I was going Bow hunting on an island in the Alleghey River. My buddy and I stopped for lunch and the boat was not covered because the tree stands were to high for the cover. Lost sight for a minute and both bows and tree stands were gone.

I HAVE TRAVELED WITH THEM ON THE DECK AND HAD NO PROBLEMS.....IF SOMEONE IS GOING TO PULL UP BESIDE YOU AND STEAL THEM WHILE YOU ARE AT A STOP LIGHT...WELL THEN THEY CAME UP TO YOU IN AN OPEN BED TRUCK AND FOLLOWED YOU FROM THE GITGO AND KNEW WHAT THEY WANTED BEFORE YOU LEFT YOUR DRIVEWAY.  NO ONE ON A MOTORCYCLE OR VW IS GOING TO STEAL YOUR 6 1/2 - 8ft RODS.

I keep mine on the deck somedays when Im fishing locally. Other than that they stay locked up in the locker.

I keep a pretty good eye out anyway at traffic lights for whatever other nonsense might be going on....I would love to see someone hope out of their car and try to grab my rods! But with that said, are you removing your electronics to? Mine never come off unless the boat is getting parked out of site longer than 5 minutes.

Squid, try driving through Minneapolis with anything in plain view.  Trust me, it will be gone.

Hello,

Been thinking about your question.   I'm assuming you have a bass boat since you have the straps for rods.  I'm assuming most rod locker boxes can carry up to around 12 rods, even the older bass boats.   My question is, why are you carrying around so my rods, I can't imagine you using 12 different rods in a day, even while pre-fishing for a tournament.  Keep some of those rods at home and lock up the others.  Just because you have 50 rods, doesn't mean you have to take them all for the boat ride. UNLESS, they get jealous.

It's a shame that we all have to worry about getting our stuff jacked.  Theives suck!!

I try to keep my eyes open for suspicious activity, epecially when the occasional fisherman loses his mind and leaves his rig unguarded in the WalMart parking lot.  Don't be afraid to speak up or jot down that license plate if you see some folks acting shady.  Most bad guys are counting on you to mind your own business and look the other way while they do their dirty work.

lol....I will remember that..lmao

I keep all my rods on the deck while trailering.  I did it the whole summer and never really had any kinds of problems.  As far as dirt is concerned i never really thought of that being a problem but it could be depending on where you're driving.

Any rods I would have on the deck trailering would have the rod and reel covers on them.

I used to on my old boat (decked jon boat). Until one time I got to the ramp and noticed one of my reels was all broke up. The only thing I can think of is that a rock flew up and nailed my reel. I don't take that chance anymore. I know have a nitro so its just as easy to throw them in the rod locker.

I don't have a rod locker on the boat, the regular lake I fish is only 8-9 miles from the house all pavement. If I go to another lake that might have gravel or dirt roads I put my rods in some sleeves that lawn chairs came in (reel first). This keeps the reels clean and ready to fish.
