When do you find swimjigs most effective?

Featured Replies

Just purchased a few new swimjigs. Never really used them before but i imagine using them like i would spinnerbaits

I run them slower and vary the speed because they get hit on the fall.

They catch them spring through fall..  summer is especially good... I recommend a rage tail menace or a single tail kalins lunker grub for a trailer

General consensus is a slow steady retrieve. But I've had luck burning them in and pitching them close to cover as well.

Generally when a more natural presentation is required or the vegetation isn't conducive for a spinnerbait.  Calmer, clearer conditions come to mind.

A swim jig with a Rage Menace grub on the back has been a hot bait for me this summer. I like using the swim jig on pressured waters where the fish see lots of flashy (spinnerbait) or hard thumping (chatterbait) lures all the time. It's a much more subtle presentation.

Great thing about a swim jig is fishing it around isolated large clumps of grass. I can flip it into a mat, hop it once or twice, then pull it out and swim it around the edges of the mat. You'll catch fish both ways doing this.

Pitching/skipping under docks then bringing them out.

I like to actually treat it as a normal jig, let it hit bottom, hop it once or twice, then swim it out. Dual presentation.

Throw a Rage craw on there too. Like @NHBull said, run it slow for the most part, but change up the retrieve speed.Somtimes I can only get hit when I burn it.

i like it for when i think a spinnerbait is just too much noise and flash, typically when there's more bluebird skies or when there's no wind and the water is dead calm.  They're also much easier to target certain cover because i can cast them so much more accurately than a spinnerbait.

throw a few twitches in on a  slow, medium or fast consistent retrieve to make the skirt flare or pulsate.

I swim all of my jigs no matter what shape the head is

I use the swimjig head when I'm fishing vegetation.

Bill Lowen, KVD and Scott Martin all have pretty good vids on utube about fishing swim jigs.
