Fishing in West Virginia

Featured Replies

So, in the fall, my brother and I will both be attending school.  He with the GI Bill and I with Vocational Rehab.  This means a monthly stipend from the Gov't and we're looking at getting a place together.

Ohio in this area doesn't have a whole lot of options while across the river in West Virginia, specifically Parkersburg, there are a LOT more options housing-wise.

So, I'm wondering what kind of fishing we can expect in West Virginia?  I've only been to the bits by Ohio and never for fishing.  Anywhere we should check out?

Appreciate the input! :)

If you have a boat, Stonewall Jackson and Cheat Lake are worth checking out.

If you're into trout fishing, West Virginia has some awesome trout streams.

Nope, no boat.  Currently shorebound and for the forseeable future.

West Virginia is well known for its river fishing of trout and smallmouth. The New River is probably the most famous river in the state for this. West Virginia has some good largemouth bass fishing such as Stonewall Jackson Lake, Bluestone Lake, Summersville Lake, Cheat Lake, etc. The only problem with bass fishing here is the winter time. Bass don't really get as big here as they do in the south because they don't grow year round. I call any bass over 3lbs a big bass here. Anything 5lbs or bigger is an absolute hog. Stonewall Jackson has probably the most abundant big bass due to the catch and release restrictions that were on the lake for many years.

best bet with no boat is ask around about farm ponds don't be afraid of scum frogs caught several 5+ on hollow body frogs/rats..

Lots of wade fishing in WV - good fishing around the locks on the Ohio - December has always been one of my best months for the lakes - the streams are good most of the time- tailwaters of the many res. can be good to great most of the winter.
