Adjustments for more speed

Featured Replies

Hey, I have a 86 jason bass boat. Its 15'9'' with a 94 johnson 100. My top speed is a little under 40mph. I was wondering if their is any adjusment s i can make to det a few mph. I has a part on back to adjust the motor vertically would this help anything? Any suggestions to get me to my fishing holes faster, besides buying a bigger boat, would be greatly appreciated.

Adjusting your trim may help. If you don't have trim adjustment from the helm you could try adjusting it at the motor's mount.

You could also look at your propeller selection. I would caution you that a propeller that gives you more speed may cut your power out of the hole shot or make your getting "on plane" time a bit longer.

my first question is this gps speed, or speedomoter? if its speedomoter, i garuntee its not accurate. Second would be to give the motor a good tune up. Make sure its firing on all 4 cylinders.

Im reading my speed from a speedometer. Does 40 mph sound about right for top speed for that motor?

you can trim like said before, or you could also buy a jack plate that will help get a few mph more out of your motor and it will help your hole shot.

First, before wanting more speed, are you willing to spend several hundred dollars to get it??? There are a number of things you can do to most any setup to get more speed but it comes at a price, time and money.

Adding a jackplate is just about a must. Depending on the boat, this could also mean having to change to longer control and streering cables.

Next is the prop, finding the right prop for your setup can be a challange, and it won't be an aluminum. Normally your going to need something like a Raker and preferably one that gives you one or two hundred rpm more than the motors red line. You get the boat pretty well dialed in with that prop and then send it of to one of the custom prop tuners and have it tuned for your boat.

Depending on the hull, this could be anywhere from 2 - 3 mph to 7 -8 mph gain. At approx $100 - S200 per mph. So, back to the question, just how much do you want more speed

A properly set up and proped boat will have more speed and more hole shot.  Just trying to go to a bigger prop will not work.

I think he has a jackplate already, just didn't say it as a jackplate.

Read this.  I think he is talking about a jackplate.

Sorry guys this is my first boat. yes i do have a jackplate i just didnt know what it was called. Its not hydraulic though. Are their any adjusments i can make to this to get a little more speed? Does 40mph sound about right for top speed of this motor and boat? And i wasnt really wanting to spend much money on it. I spend most my extra money on tackle. Thanks for the tips, these message boards are really helpfull to beginners.

40 sounds right just beacuse of the year the hull is. But you could get a lot more out of that 100...you could probably start seeing speeds upwards of 55 if you were to do the right things. But at that cost just buy a new boat.

First, your speedo is not accurate. You will probably be dissapointed to find out its reading a few mph high (atleast). Always go by GPS on water speeds.

Second, get a tune up. While its in the shop let them know your looking to get some more power out of the eninge. They can do some minor valve and carb adjustments that will unleash atleast a little more for you.

Third, get a new prop. Visit your local shop that carrys props. See what they suggest and then see if they will let you try it before buying it. A lot of places allow this along as you dont scratch or dent the prop. This will let you find exactly what feels good to you.

Fourth, your hull could probably be refinished. Im sure it being that age there is build up, roughness to the finish. This can take down almost 20% of the power out a boat. Again take it a shop (hull repair) and let them give you their opinion on it. It may be in good enough shape that you can do it yourself at home.

You have to be aware of conditions when posting top end speeds:

1. Wind Conditions

2. Direction of wind travel in regards to boat travel

3. Number of people in boat and how much gear (approx)

4. How long does it take you to get to top end speed

5. RPMS at WOT (Wide Open Throttle)

Isnt it easier to just go fishing?

Thanks for the suggestions guys i really aprreciate it. I guess i was hoping thier may have been a few cheap things to do to get a few mph. I think ill just enjoy the ride and consintrate on my fishing instead. May save my money and get a little nicer rig.

First thing to do is look under the dash and you will see a small black tube running to the center of the speedometer, unhook this tube and tie a knot in

it. Then take a weekend off and wash and wax this boat like you have never

done before. I guarantee you it will run faster the next time you take her out.

Goahead try it you will be surprised. 8-)

What W2S said.  Speed = $$$

First, a boat speedo is a highly inaccurate beast for measuring speed.  What's worse is even if you made some changes, the reading you get from it may or may not be reflecting true changes you've made.

The most important information you failed to give us was your current WOT RPM's.  RPM readings are a far better gauge than a speedometer.

The cheapest thing you can do is to simply raise the motor a notch and see what happens.  Again though, if you're at max RPM's at your high end now you may lose more speed.  Increased top end speed often comes at the expense of holeshot.

Boat setups can be a long, involved and expensive deal.

Wow i didnt know speedometers on boats where so inaccurate. I really enjoy my boat, and 40 mph seems like im going pretty fast on the water. But everyone knows once you get use to 40mph you want 50mph and so on.  Thanks for the suggestions.
