Panfishing setup

Featured Replies

Hey guys I'm new to the forums but really need some help with recommendations on panfishing setup. I live down in south florida and we have bluegill, sunfish, mayan cichlid, you name it we probably have it. Its safe to say I'm a biginner so I'm looking for a inexpensive setup around 50. Thanks

What kind of fishing would you like to do? Fly? Spinning? bait?

Will you be fishing larger ponds etc or small creeks?

I will be fishing man made lakes and lots of florida canals and I would like to stick to spinning.

post this in '' other species '' , this is the custom rod section of the forum ....  :Copy_of_icon_thumright:

Honestly, You would be fine with a catch more fish spinning combo in panfish or trout both will do just fine for the task.

They're not to much too, It'll run you about 30$ if you get it off amazon.

I just picked up a whuppin' stick, I'm very happy with it for the price.

For stuff that size, any ultralight spinning (not spincasting) combo from your local StuffMart and maybe some fresh, 4lb mono will be all you need.

Slight upgrade would be a Berkeley Cherrywood rod and a better spinning reel (Pflueger Trion)... That would put you real close or a little over your pricepoint.

I use a Berkeley Lightning spinning rod paired with a small Trion for all my trout/panfishing.

Just remember, you get what you pay for.

I would not recommend your first setup to be specific to one type of fish, especially in Florida where you have excellent bass fishing. I'd recommend a 2500 size Shimano and probably a 6'6" medium power, fast action rod. Spool with quality 8lb line, and you could pull off panfish and bass fishing.

I'd highly recommend raising your limit to 100, the quality jump will be VERY noticeable.

Reply if you'd like some setup ideas.

5ft ultralight and 6lb mono

I normally use a size 30 president on a 7'0" ml spinning rod.  I have 6 pound mono spooled on it.  I sometimes have problems casting out an ultralight, and the ml rod gives me a little more peace of mind in case I catch something larger than a panfish.
