Possible new to me boat transom

Featured Replies

So I looked at a 1996 Ranger 461vs today. I noticed something on the transom that has me questioning it. The bottom paint came up all the way to the rub rail on the setback.  This has me thinking about possible transom problems/work in the past or if the bottom was just repainted and someone brought it up that high.  Anyone have any thoughts or seen setbacks on 461's painted like this?

Also, the color is a lot more gray on person than it looks in this picture.

Thanks for confirming. Thats what I was thinking too but didnt want to believe it. You know how it is when you have a case of the wants.

Oh, yes I do!

I dont know, my bass boat is like that.  I had little chips and cuts on the bottom edge.  I noticed them when I was installing a underwater light right above the drain hole.  I just did not like the way it looked so I taped it all up, filled the spots I did not like with fiberglass, sanded it all real nice and then I used flex seal that you see on TV.  It looks great, but it looks like this and there is no damage to the transom at all.

They are easy to test, you can use a small hammer and a rag, so as not to scratch up the other persons boat but I would not let the paint scare you away, also look inside, if it has been repaired it can be spotted easy.

It's DEFINITELY been repaired.  The setback transom should look the same as the sides, not the bottom.  Like this:
