Reel like the Lews carbon fire?

Recommended Posts

So out of all the reels I've owned

Lews Tournament SK (TSK1SH)

Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier

Team Lews Pro Z

Lews Carbon Fire (CF1SH)

I like the original Carbon Fire the most. I love the feel of the spool and how far it casts. It's never given me any problems and has just been my solid go to reel.

I'm looking for a reel similar to the carbon fire (the original one) that is a step up in quality.

What's your budget? If you like lews (not my favorite brand) you could try a bb1, or a lfs. My personal choice of reels is the daiwa tatula ct. Can be had for $100 on ebay and Amazon. They require a different setting up but once you do, you can bomb casts and can be mostly backlash free. (depending on your casting technique)

I would also suggest the Tatula CT. I run 7 Tatulas of different flavent flavors.

However if you want to stay in a Lews how about a Lews Mach 1 Speed spool. your reel should be a 7 bearing reel ( six shielded and 1 roller bearing). The Mach 1 contains 9 bearings plus one roller bearing.

It should adjust very close to what you have. A Carbon Fire goes for around $80and the Mach 1 goes for $119.  That is retail not what they can be found on the internet for.

I was looking at the LFS, but I think I'll try the Tatula. I've been a lews fan but haven't really tried any other brand so I'll definitely look into buying a tatula

Youtube how to set up a baitcaster with the magforce z braking system. I believe @fishnkamp has posted links before. It is similar to a normal baitcaste

I really recommend the Tatulas!  NO it is not similar to any other baitcaster!.   Setting up a Tatula is totally different than setting up any other reel. If you ever set up a Lews or Shimano as loose as a Daiwa gets setup then the backlash would be astronomical. It would become a Bill dance 'You might want to trade that one in".  Take a look at these two videos.

The first one will show you what Mag Force and Mag Force Z is all about.

Most reels have either manually adjusted  magnetics brakes ( like your Lews) or manually adjusted centrifugal brakes like the ones they have in a Shimano Curado.  Some have a combination of the two like the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier.  The Daiwa reels that have Mag Force, Mag Force Z and includes the Daiwa SV reels.  All of these reels have a set of weights that are opposed by springs, they automatically alter the amount of braking force- just like a lawn mowers governor would control its speed.  There is also the manual setting the angler can adjust as well.  The second video explains how to properly set up a Tatula SV TWS reel up. All the Tatulas should be set this way.

Just watched the videos, pretty sold on a Tatula. Those are really cool breaking systems. Thanks!

If you like Lew's, why switch. I have three of their LFS Tournament MB's now and one old BPS Johnny Morris reel. I'll replace the BPS before much longer. I'm replacing all with higher speed reels. It's funny how a 7.5:1 reel is now just a normal speed. I have a BPS XPS Rick Clunn edition reel that's maybe 8 or 10 years old that's 7.1:1 and it says on the reel "SUPER HIGH SPEED".

I still got my original carbon fire and it still works like a champion. I have been on my Daiwa tip now so I haven't really went back to Lew's.
