i was just looking for some opinions on the 4 blade props, i have a smaller outboard 40hp and was wondering what your thoughts are? Or should i just stay with the 3 blade?

4 blades are good for providing lift on boats that are having a problem with that. You'll usually sacrifice some top end speed with them over a 3 blade of the same pitch. If you can get by with a 3 blader you're much better off.

I can't speak for the smaller outboards.  On a V-6 you get faster hole shot, better rough water handling.  You will give up about 2-3mph over a 3-blade.  On a 40hp rig I can't see that it would matter that much.... :-?

I agree....better hole shot, loss of top end speed, better control in rough water and at lower lower speeds.

If you using an aluminum 3 blade I would go to a stainless 4 blade. Aluminum bends and twists changing pitch under a load.

Smaller boats usually do not require a 4 blade.  Remember the best possible prop in the owrld is a single blade prop.  They do not exist.  If you are trying to get more speed go with a higher pitch, or better yet, use what you have with a cup.  Four blade are predominantly for heavy boats that need more push.

On a smaller boat, a 4 blade prop is overkill.
