New reel needed for jerk baits

Featured Replies

I am looking for reel recommendations for my GLOOMIS MBR 842 glx. it is the 2016 version.

This rod will also see some duty as a drop shot combo. Do not have a set budget, so recommend what you think would be best regardless of price.

It can be $100 or $500 as long as it would be good for this application.

Gear ratio or line per inch recommendations would be great also.

Three good choices

1 daiwa alphas.

2. Shimano core

3. And if money is no issue a zpride.

For your MBR rod I think the best suit would be shimano Aldebaran 50.

If you don't want to spend quite so much, there is a Daiwa Tatula CT that will fit any need. I love my HSTA's, Fuego's and TD-Z's but my Tatula's are better casters in most situations! The more I use mine the more impressed I become.

I would go with a faster ratio reel like 7:1 in the shimano line.

I would look at any SV spool Daiwa, 7.1:1 minimum

Since that is sort of a mag finesse combo you are building I would look at the Daiwa Alphas SV 105. Reel is on sale at TW as well. It is simply amazing for what you want to throw and with the sale is a great deal. If you can snag the 7:2.1 ratio I would probably go that direction.

Thanks for the replies, At this point I am leaning to the Aldabaran or scorpion. I have several of the Daiwa sv reels and am thinking of mixing it up a little. I like Shimano as I stated out with the curado series. I have the new K as well as older reels.

I picked up the steez today. My dealer gave me a deal I could not refuse. $250.00. He had it on the shelf to long and wanted to move it. i'm going to order new 7.X gears for it and a longer carbon handle with Megabass knobs.
May even add a little bling to it!

Never had issues with 6.3 gears for jerkbaits.  Have you tried it yet???

No, haven't tried it yet. Just going by what has been suggested.

I would see how it meets your needs before you spend any more money.  The bulk of my reels are 6.3 and there are very few times it does not work perfectly.  The exception would be frogging i like the 7.1 or 7.3 better for that.  I own a 7.9 and i cannot seem to find a good use for it, so it stays on a flipping setup.

I will have to try it, I just found out their are no options for the 6.3 to be upgraded to a higher 7.x due to the size of the gear box. Until recently I had no reels faster than a 6.3, so I guess it will be fine.
