Boat Guide-on's for Trailer - DIY project

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how to make a pair of guide-ons to straighten the boat out on the trailer something like this?

I'd like to have them, but I don't feel like paying $80+ for them.....so making a pair would be much cheaper I'd imagine. I know there are some handy people on here, so hopefully someone here has made a set. Any help greatly appreciated. ;)

I bought some that were very similar from BPS on sale for 50% off.  If you watch BPS and Cabelas sales fliers you can probably do the same.

If ya have a tubing bender layin' around, you are in luck.  If not, you still are in luck.  Just go to anywhere that sells stock steel (not lowes or home depot.  I mean as a main business)  Many scrap yards also sell new steel, even though they look like just scrapyards.  Most steelyards also will work and weld steel for ya.  Most have a tubing bender.  Get some 1 1/2 inch square or round stock.  Get em to bend to a 90 degrees, (or whatever ya need) and attach to trailer with U-bolts.  Or, get em to weld them to your trailer.  Now, you just need rollers, and you can do them yourself.

If ya use U bolts, and you have to crisscross them diagonally, make sure one has the cutout to go over the other.  And, take into consideration that it will take a wider opening in the U as the diagonal distance is longer than the across distance.  And, there are round and square U bolts for different types of tubing.

I know a guy who used one of those ladder things that keeps the top of an aluminum ladder away from your house.  He bought it at Lowe's for $20, and the hardware was maybe another 20, including the rollers.  I prefer the bunk type.

Yeah the bunk-type would be fine as well, and probably easier to make, but I guess the hard part is finding or making the metal angled piece.  I don't know of any metal places around, but I'll check around and see what I can find.  Thanks for the ideas.

If you have access to a metal distributor, or Lowe's or Home Depot stock metal, you can pick up 4 pieces of flat stock about 30" long, 2.5" wide and 1/4" thick.  You can bend them in a vise.  Drill the holes to match the frame of the trailer, bend them so they flare out, then back up to meet the hull where you want, cut off any excess, and drill a hole at the top for the bunk.  Just paint the metal and poof! you is dun!

I just got some materials last night to try and experiment/make something.  Total cost was $10, and they should take about 30 min to install.  I got some 1'' conduit PVC pipe (thicker walled than reg. PVC), couplers, 90 deg. elbows, end caps, and a metal adapter to attach to the trailer.  The pipe is really sturdy, and I think it will work based on the fact that I just need them to line up my jon boat going back on the trailer, and not to support any weight.  We'll see how it goes.  I'll post pics when I am finished.

My boat that i boat had PVC guide ons and they work fine. except one thing is we drilled a hold in the top of both and ran a bungee across, because when you are pulling the trailer the tubing will slap the side of the boat. Just  a suggestion.
