should i get a trolling motor?

Featured Replies

Hello me and my dad just acquired a 14 foot jon boat and are fixing it up. My dad is talking to guy that is trying to find us a little kicker between 10 and 15 horsepower. but the big question is DO I NEED A TROLLING MOTOR? many people have said yes and some have said no. If i do what kind should i get? We don't won't to spend much on it. maybe at the most $150.

Thanks

if all your going to do is drift fish. then you do not need a TM, but if you want to move around quitely, in and out of cover then get a TM. I can not see fishing for bass from a boat with out a TM. A TM is a must.

If $150 is your max, then look at a transom mount 12 volt TM. In BPS you can get a 30 pound thrust TM Motorguide or minnkota for $109 and a 36 Pound thrust  for $150, you can also get a Bass Pro Shops Prowler 30 pound thrust TM for $99.

I allways say buy the biggerst TM you can afford. If your looking for a small outboard check out http://www.smalloutboards.com/

thank you ya i was thinking of opening up my old piggy bank lol and uh goin and gettin one. but ya thanks for the quick reply!

I can't imagine bass fishing with artificial lures without using a TM.

look for something in the 30 to 45lbs thrust range.  I have a 14ft al with a 34 lbs thrust.   It works great.  If i had to choose between getting a gas outboard and a TM, which I did have to do, I 'd go with the Tm again.  Of course I was fishing smaller lakes.  It takes longer to get to your spot with the TM but it is easier to fish once you get there.

Don't forget to get a good automatic deep cycle charger to go along with the TM and deep cycle battery.

Have fun!!!
