Unusual Spinning Reels

Featured Replies

I know many of you do not like spinning reels, but I've been using them since I was a kid.  Anyway, here are couple of unusual spinning reels I have.

The blue reel is a Mitchell 440A.  It has an automatic bail.  This was one of my "extra" reels when I started fishing as a kid.  My dad had one of these, and I bought a couple to use and an extra one "just in case" (of course, it took a while to earn the money needed to buy them).  The bail opens automatically when you push on it if it is in the correct position.  It allows one-handed operation of the reel when casting.  The anti-reverse is noisy though and there is a lot of friction when reeling compared to modern spinning reels.

The gray one is a Quantum Hypercast HPX30.  It has a lever for handling the bail.  I only used this twice because I could never figure out how to disengage the anti-reverse.

I don't use either one anymore.  I just keep them around for memories.

Used to have my Dad's Mitchell reels from back

in the day. Solid reels. Had an old Daiwa similar

to the Quantum, with one-handed casting.

I used Mitchell reels back in the day. I still have a Mitchell reel on its orginal garcia two star rod. This was my bass rod setup back in '74.

I have a couple old Mitchell reels hanging in my shop for decoration, but they're still in very operable condition. I believe Quantum used to make a reel called the Quick Cast, had a little pin and that same trigger to supposedly be able to cast without ever touching the line. It didn't work very well so I usually ended up still holding the line with my finger.
