extended warranties ?

Featured Replies

When you buy fish finders, trolling motors etc. are you finding extended warranties worth while? I'll be picking up both a couple of fish finders and a trolling motor this winter and I'm wondering if I should get extended warranties with them. For example, reading thru the BPS Gear guard plan fine print restrictions, it seems there are many loop holes on things they would cover.

Extended warranties are there not for your protection but to provide pure profit for the store who sold it to you. Stores require employees to sell warranties because of how profitable they are. Keep your money. The odds are in your favor that you will come out ahead by not buying the extended warranty.

Agree with the above comment.

Humminbird has a fixed rate of I believe $260 for any single repair on a unit that is out of warranty.

Might consider purchasing your units from another party. Nothing wrong with BPS but deals on units are few and far between. You could potentially save hundreds of dollars per item by purchasing from a company like universalmania or BBG Marine Electronics

I agree about better deals at other places, I was just using BPS as an example. That being said, if BPS had the best prices or sales I could drive over and pick them up and not have to pay sales tax. I'm in Maine, BPS is in NH.

@jbmaine ~ Going to a Fishing or Outdoor show over the winter can be a decent way to get useful information on trolling motors, electronic & just about anything & everything you'll need (and don't need) for your new rig.  You'll be able to see, get hands on and compare brands & models of the newest gear as well as talk directly to the knowledgeable humans who sell it.

I spent some extended time at a big show here in MI looking at gear, as well as the rig I was planning on purchasing prior to placing any orders.  It proved very helpful as I was afforded a couple of how to and ono on one demo's my sales reps on several electronics.  I went the first day the show opened (Thursday I think) just as it opened, before it got crowded and in advance of the Sales reps getting burned out.  All were ready, willing & very motivated to show off their gear.  I did not purchase any gear at the show. (I had made prior arrangements to get them & have them installed by the dealer; just had to decide what I wanted.   Worked out nicely.) But my point is the prices were at the very least competitive at the show and in some cases very attractive.

Just a little food for thought.

I forget the exact statistics but somewhere around 90%+ of the time a product fails it does so in under 6 months.  This applies to the majority of products which is why manufactures offer a 12 month warranty.  On top of that I avoid extended warranties like the plague b/c there are so many if/and/but clauses attached.  I challenge anyone to try and get money out of Hewlett Packard for a printer warranty:D

The only thing I buy the insurance for is an Apple laptop.........because it's required

I buy insurance for our iPhones, MacBook, and my iMac.

Next time I buy a MacBook or iMac I may not. They've been

quite rock solid over the past many years. iPhones, worth

the money so far.

Other stuff, including fishing gear, no.
