Baitcast abu 5000 vs lower profile baitcast

Featured Replies

Hey everyone!  I grew up throwing spinning reels and only have one baitcast which is the 5000.  I'm going on a 3 day fishing trip and gona buy another rod and reel.  I'm tempted to get a baitcaster like http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/sportsmans/mobile/Abu-Garcia-Revo®-X-Low-Profile-Baitcast-Combo/productDetail/Bait-Casting-Combos/prod99999055115/cat101045and I wonder how different it will cast versus the 5000?   Any thoughts?

I think the 5000 is a tough workhorse reel but as a casting reel leaves a lot to be desired in terms of cast controls and repetitively throwing lighter baits.  I think you’ll be happy with any of the low profile reels from a major company.  I can’t speak to the combo you cite because I’ve never used or seen one.  Lately I’ve been doting on Daiwa Tatula reels.  They’re all well built.  I just got a Tatula SV TW off eBay for $125 and consider it a  great buy. Read a review of it on Tackletour.com

I have a 5000 that I still use occasionally.  They are bullet proof , heavy duty reels, but super heavy for an entire day of casting.  The new low profile reels make casting all day so much easier, paired with the proper rod.  I still remember Hank Parker using the round abu's much of the time during his tournament days.  Still great reels, but like a 1960 big body car, behind the times, but still love to drive once in a while!!!!!

Thank you geo g and bobp.  So I bought the abu pro max combo today.   I understand the drag system but what's with the two dial systems on the new reel?  One on the right, one one the left.  I think they both have to do with tension vs back lashing but the 5000 only has the dial on the right for that.

Assuming you have a right handed reel, the knob on the right by the reel handle is the spool tension knob, it has the biggest control over the initial excelleration of the lure.  The control on the left is the magnetic controls, it adjusts the magnetic force exerted on the spool, ie mostly the deceleration (the end of your cast) of the lure.

Set the spool tension knob so that the lure slowly drops to the floor, and start with the magnetics up on 10 (or whatever is highest) and back it off a little after each cast until you find the setting that helps achieve the distance and accuracy you want-with little or no backlashng.
