Hooks and Rust.........

Featured Replies

I have couple dozen or so jerk bait that i've had for a while.  The hooks on about 1/2 of them are pretty rusty, is there a way to prevent this or do they make stainless or rust free hooks i can replace them with?  Also, is there a tool to use to get them on there?  Replacing all those hooks by hand will not be fun.

Yes you can get a split ring tool. Most hooks have a coating to prevent rust, or are made of a rust free material.

I have two bomber square A's with their hooks rusted up real badly.  The loop where the split ring is attached is even rusted.  Im not sure if these baits are even salvageable.  ;)    My other baits faced the same conditions they did and did not rust.  So apperently cheaper hooks do rust easier.

Try using pliers when opening the split rings off thats what I always have done. Just be gentle when doing it because it would suck if the split ring broke off  ;)

Hey this may sound stupid but put some chalk in your box. Just take a few pieces and toss them in. Really work well to prevent the rust. I've even seen some guys in similar threads suggest those thos little packet that come in clothes and shoes. Silica Gel I think?

I keep the little packets of silica jell that you find in electronics packages and so on and keep one in each of my 3700 boxes and not had a problem with rust. To make life simple get some split ring pliers its money well spent. Something I also do is keep split rings on hand that I can change out if there looking a little rough or rusty or a little sprung.
