Amount of HP to plane Jon Boat of x size & weigh

Featured Replies

First off let me start off by saying this is a very nice form. I learned quiet a bit. I read a lot of the older post and have gotten some very good ideals to decking my Durcraft boat.

Got a question that I ask over on pagebiz.com (Ol' Paw's Fishing Tackle Bulletin Board) and never got an answer to a few years ago and thougt i push it out to some of the wize ones of this board!

Anyone know of a formula / chart that one could use / cross reference to fig out what it will take to plane out boat with x measures and x amount of weight?

I have a 1965 jon boat 1436 at most 125 pounds ( maybe 1432? ) and a 1972 /1976 Duracraft 1448 about 175 to 200 Pounds

I pick up both of these boats real cheep. The 1436 $40.00 and the Durcraft $85 with a tilting trailer with spare tire!

As soon as I can get my tow vehickle back on the road I have the time i will deck the Durcraft from aft to stern and the little jon just with a casting deck and flat floors.

LBH My boat and your boat share a simular name LoL

I got this formula from Minn Kota before.  I just checked their site and it has been redesigned, couldn't find it.  Email them, I'm sure they will pass it on.

Throw a 20hp motor on the back of either boat and you should have no problem.

Derived from year in the Cajun outback  ;)

1432/36: 15 to 25 hp

1448: 25 to 40 hp

I think he is looking for the actual mathmatic formula to calculate the smallest possible motor for his desired performance...he wants the exact technical data....typical of a computer guy! LOL! LOL! Just Teasing!

I have heard of this before but have never found any information on it. It seems to me that there are to many variable for a calculation like this to be very accurate. The pitch on the prop, seating position in the boat, deadrise of the hull, weight of passengers, weight of gear...

a good qualified guess or experience like that offered by the guys here will probably be the most helpful info you will find.

Those all sound a little high to me.  I have a 1232 and when i was 12 years old we would ski behind it with an 8 horse.  That was 3 100lb kids and the 100lb boat on plane with 8hp.  I am 30 now and 200 lbs and put an 18hp on it last year.  It probably did 25 with just me in it.  I think the boat planed at about 12 mph.  The boat was rated for a 5 horse.

But like cart7 said, but you can't go wrong with a 20 horse.
