Minn Kota or Motorguide?

Featured Replies

I've had a bunch of saltwater boats, never a bass boat. What trolling motor do I want on a 19 - 20 bass boat Minn Kota or Motorguide? I'm not into gimicks, just want a great quality solid motor.

your gonna get arguements for both sides  as you did with the what boat  question,  its your boat  sooner or later your gonna have to make the decision,  while its fine and dandy to ask what motor, what boat, etc.  your just gonna get answers for both and it wont help any,  cause im gonna say motorguide   ive had one for years  and no problems.       oh   and when you ask what electronics  im gonna say garmin.  ive loved mine since day one

Motorguide or Minn Kota?

well, that like ford or Chevy.

One guys will say MG is the best MK sucks, the next Mk is the best MG sucks

In TM's you only have two choices, and Both have great motors.

Buy the biggest motor you can afford. with a 19 foot boat you will want a 24 volt or even a 36Volt ( if you have room for 3 batteries)

My suggestion would be to go to a store (  BPS, Cabela's, ect..) that has both out so you can look at each and see which one you like better. whcih has the features you like. (I also give this advice when buying depthfinder/GPS)

I have both brands, on my 2 boats one has MK one has MG. In my mind ( now some one will say I am wrong, but this is my 2 cents) The Motor guide Digital Tour series is hard to beat. I have a 109# 36 volt on my boat and its the best I have use. I had an older 70# 24 volt Mg on it and it sucked really bad, but the tour Digital are in another ball park from the older MGs.

PS I like Humminbird

Both motors are excellent so when I'm selling a customer on which one to consider I show them the fact that on MinnKota the skeg is in front of you depth finder's transducer instead of behind it like on the Motor Guide. If you were to hit something with the MinnKota you will not break your transducer.

Yeh, I've got a bunch of decisions to make in the next bit here - I'm all set on electronics, etc. - thanks for the smartass answer. Didn't know if there was a huge difference or not. Thanks for the help. I've learned a lot this week re: boats, ignorant brand loyaly, etc. all of the great input and referals to some owner boards have helped dispell some myths.

hey cheif  if your referring to me  i was only kiddin with you, but ill guess youll have to make a post  and ask everybody    waqs he kidding or not kidding,   if your gonna take everything personal, id suggest  you get over it real quick

My only input to this question mk vs mg is look at the deploy method.  I purchased a new MK this spring (power drive w/auto pilot) i am not happy with the deploy method.  Stick to one with the string tee-handle deploy.  Besides that it is a toss up.  The MK is motor driven on the turns and MG is cable.  It takes a bit of getting use too.

I've got Minn Kota on my Lund, after speaking with my Bass Cat dealer I'll be sticking with it.

Thanks again to all.

Turfman the only reply i will make is that i chose motorguide because i liked the foot pedal better than the minn kotas, the motorguide is smaller and more streamlined,i also looked high and low for a original gator mount in the pound thrust i wanted and found it in minnisota finally. If i could buy another one just like it i would for a spare someday if i ever buy another boat.Oh and lowrance for me on depthfinders! ;)

ive used mk for years and have only burnt one out ,that was about 10 years ago.
