Just installed fishfinder..scratching head though

I just installed my new Humminbird 565 8-)

First off, I just want to let anyone who thinks it's tough that it's not. I'm the type who feels incompetent when doing anything electrical. I found out that my local boat mechanic hurt his back and couldn't do the install for about a month.  ;) So I went ahead and did it my self. It took only 2 hours after making sure I had all the materials I needed.

Now to my question. Should the transducer have accurate depth readings on dry land? With the boat on the trailer, it sits about 24inches off the ground but I'm getting a 6.7ft reading off the unit. Everything else seems to work great, accurate temp and so on.

No it won't read through the air to the ground.

No, you will not get accurate depth measurements unless the transducer is submerged in water.
