Higher class rod in lighter or heavier weight?

Featured Replies

Sorry if I'm being pretty particular in this but I know a lot of guys here have more experience than me and I could use input.

I've decided on purchasing 2 rods to replace 2 broken ones this year.  I'm sticking with St Croix as it's always worked for me, and have decided on a 6'6" Legend Elite Spinning, and 6'6" Legend Tournament Walleye Series.  I 99% fish finesse, light lure stuff, but wanted one medium and one medium light as I won't be going up to Medium Heavy but wanted one rod with a bit more backbone than medium light.  The simplest solution I know would be to just get both in the higher Elite series but I cant spend $750 on 2 rods right now.

Which weight would you prefer on the higher quality rod as that will be what I'm fishing the most.  I understand they're similar rods and very similar weights.  The main difference I see between the 2 is the Elite has SCV and SCVI graphite which I'm assuming just means slightly more sensitive than the Walleye's SCIV.

Bottom line, Medium Light on Elite Series where ultimate sensitivity is key? Or Medium light on the Legend Tournament Walleye because a lighter action would transmit bites better on a lower grade blank.

Thanks in advance, cabin fever in the blizzard in NJ gives me time to ponder these trivial questions.

I completely agree with dvt on this one.  My question is why so short?   Love me some 610 rods.

I reserve the highest modulus blanks for the most finesse techniques. In this case the ML.

Is this because they are more brittle or..?

No because they are the most sensitive

I feel stupid now, that didn’t cross my mind

Get the LE for the ml and the LTW for the medium.

Thank you very much everyone for the advice.  Figured that was best but nice to get some confirmation!
