This year, I want to throw some finesse swim baits for smallmouth. I'm talking about Swing Impact Fat 3.3s and 3.8s. I will be ordering a St. Croix LTB swim jig finesse rod (7'1 MH XF, 5/16-3/4oz lure rating) in the next few weeks for swim jigs and T-rigs. I know a lot of guys throw these swim baits on a 1/8oz jig head on spinning tackle. However, I want to know if this swim jig rod would work for that too. Or do I need to buy a 7' medium fast spinning rod too? 

A 3.8" FA weights around 3\8oz just buy it's self, and with a 3\0 by 1\8oz swimbait hook, weighs almost 1\2oz on the nose.  I throw them on most any rod that will load well with them and have never noticed much difference, leaving aside considerations of cover.  

I toss the 3.8 on my sc5 610 mxf.  The next step up I use a 70mhf.

Does the 7' MH Fast handle such a small bait well?

I throw those baits on my old LTB70MF.

I feel like I get better casts on the smaller baits on the medium.  If you sticking to st Croix and 3.8 is the biggest your going then the medium would be first choice.  The regular 4" baits swing impact and easy shiner are also medium rod baits.  The 4.8 fat has a larger hook that needs more power IMO and I lost a pb on a 4.8 on the mxf so I will not run that bait on the medium again.

I mean... If you think you need a medium spinning rod, then I'll help ya out and say "Yeah, you need a medium spinning rod." I use my Dobyns Savvy 703c, it's more of a medium action rod and it loads well enough to throw those smaller swimbaits. It's perfect for me.
